We have seen in recent times an ever growing global citizenship and camaraderie
between Africans in the Diaspora and their home countries.
The uprising that ousted President Omar al-Bashir earlier this year is a case in point;
Sudanese across the globe played critical roles in championing the revolution and
spreading awareness on the world stage. The role of Africans living abroad is thus a
force to reckon with.
For a while now, the narrative has consistently illustrated the ever growing ties
between Africans abroad and their home countries. Africans in the diaspora hold both
social and political power but not only that; they have significant influence and
agency over the economic trajectory of their homelands. To put this in perspective,
remittances to sub-Saharan Africa have grown from $37.8 billion in 2017 and are
projected to hit $47 billion by the end of 2019!
Therefore, the economic might of Africans in the diaspora is not only enabling
families back home to buy goods and services; it similarly has a significant influence
on the overall GDP of these countries.
As such, the spirit of economic revolution runs deep in what Zao represents. At Zao,
we aim to unlock the potential back home by enabling access to high-touch and
personable investments. We are tapping into activism and agency and guaranteeing
impact and returns.
As the term ‘Zao’ means ‘theirs’ in Kiswahili, we believe that our
families back home deserve a bright future that is ‘theirs’; likewise, our families in the
diaspora deserve the opportunity to be a part of the change that is also ‘theirs’.
